Fire alarm control panel (FACP)
A fire alarm panel is the controlling component of a fire alarm system that receives and processes information from and sends commands to interconnected devices such as:
- Initiating devices (i.e., smoke detectors)
- Notification appliances (i.e., horn strobe)
- Relay (i.e., elevator control)
It also monitors the operational integrity of these devices and provides a way for their automatic control. FACP can be conventional or addressable. The first is more affordable and designed for small occupancies, while the latter is designed for larger and more complex facilities such as high-rise residences, malls, industrial plants, etc.
Smoke detector
Commercial smoke detectors are designed to provide early life safety by sensing the smoke of an incipient fire and delivering a signal to the fire alarm control panel, which will then sound an alarm to notify the occupants.
Household smoke detectors, on the other hand, also detect smoke but have built-in batteries that may last for years on standby operation, and their own sounders to generate notification. These are commonly used on small facilities where automatic fire alarm is not yet required, like one- and two-story family dwellings.
Manual pull station
The manual pull station (MPS), also known as manual call point (MCP), is a device that allows the manual operation of fire alarm equipment to trigger a notification. They can be single-action or double-action. The first only requires pulling the lever to trigger an alarm response, whereas the latter requires two movements, typically a push and pull action.
